Sunshine story from Nandigram
KOLKATA: Bloodshed, violence, gunbattles. Over the past year, Nandigram and Singur made national headlines for all the wrong reasons. Here at last is a story from the hot spots that is sure to bring some cheer.
Chinmoy Middya and Mansi Samanta, two special children from the strife-torn areas, have overcome tremendous odds to win laurels at the Shanghai Special Olympics.
1x1 polls
Chinmoy, from Nandigram, picked up two silvers and a bronze, while Singur’s Manasi won two silvers.
The families had no idea Chinmoy and Manasi would reach the pinnacle of success. Chinmoy (18), an introvert, found it hard to grasp complex matters from childhood. “He was mentally weak from birth. Ironically, he has brought the family money and fame today,” said father Kanailal. The family moved from Garchakraberia to Haldia to take better care of their youngest child. Till trouble erupted in January, Chinmoy’s brothers tilled the land in Garchakraberia. Since then, the family has been in and out of Nandigram.
From an early age, Chinmoy loved athletics and football. But under trainer Alok Mondol, he focused on swimming from 2004. That paid off: he won medals at national meets for special children.
